Qualifications/AffiliationsDiploma of Civil Engineering, RMIT (1967) Representative ExperienceAllan McConnell is a well-known geotechnical engineer, with 36 years experience, mostly in Australia. He has been a leader in one of the biggest geotechnical consulting practices in Australia, and is now an independent consultant. Allan has experience in most aspects of geotechnical engineering, from foundations, basements and pavements, to land stability assessment, to mine infrastructure and landfill engineering. He is known for his work on major development projects on “difficult” and “soft” sites. He is also known for his practical approaches to quantifying risk and uncertainty in geotechnical problems; assisting clients to make “$ vs result” decisions. He has a successful track record in geotechnical “value engineering” and problem solving.
Typical AssignmentsBrisbane Airport - site investigations, preloading, and performance risk management for the domestic and international terminals and aprons on a low-lying swampy site. Also Qantas Heavy Maintenance Facility, Virgin Simulator, Virgin Hangar, No 1 Airport Drive, etc. Semi-continuous involvement since 1979. Henderson Airport, Honiara, Solomon Islands, 1990 and 1999 and 2002, investigations for PCI. On this project McConnell Consulting also provided topographical survey services. River-edge stability - geotechnical investigation, assessment and risk management of many river-edge projects in potentially unstable soil conditions. Projects include Expo 88 Brisbane, South Bank Development, Brisbane, stabilisation of Coronation Drive, Brisbane, etc. High Rise Buildings - foundation investigation and design for many major high rise buildings (Riverside Centre, Riparian Plaza, Waterfront Place, Hyatt & Hilton Hotels, Admiralty Wharf, Brisbane Central, many Gold Coast projects (including Soul), many Cairns projects, several Townsville projects, etc). Mine Infrastructure - geotechnical engineering of many mine infrastructure projects and upgrades, including such notable ones as: the 270m high chimney stack at Mt Isa; access roads, crusher and smelter foundations. Assessments for Gold Ridge, Guadalcanal, and Coal projects in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Geotechnical engineering input into the design and closure of tailings dams at mine sites in Australia, Indonesia, PNG, Solomon Islands. Mine infrastructure, processing plants, tanks, ponds, etc, at Mt Isa, Ernest Henry, Macarthur River, Weipa, Collinsville, Moura, Phosphate Hill, etc. Sugar Mills around Queensland - site investigations and foundation design and analysis for many upgrade projects for sugar mills around Queensland. Rail and Road Bridges - upwards of 50-60 bridge sites throughout Australia and SE Asia, for roads and railways.
